The centre

Charisma Tumaini Centre is a functional arm of Charisma Ministries International, a para Church organization registered both in Kenya and the United Stated of America. The Centre is situated within the Sinai Slum Industrial Area, in Nairobi City. It is about 10 km from the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. The majority of people who live here are casual labourers at the nearby industries and also very poor communities who cannot afford houses with the much needed amenities in the nearby estates.

Initially, Tumaini Children Centre started as a Saturday feeding program in 2002. The children would meet together on Saturdays for Christian and social teachings, play games and then have lunch before going home in the afternoon. Interaction with the children brought to the fore an alarming fact: most of them were not receiving elementary education, the only asset that would enable them break out of the poverty gridlock. Charisma Ministries decided to introduce a cost-sharing elementary school, which began in 2004. However the cost-sharing factor all but flopped since the parents were unable to pay even the modest of fees.

Charisma Ministries opted to shoulder the fees burden and allowed the children to come to school for five days in a week, while on Saturdays they would attend Bible lessons at the centre. To most of the children at our centre, the lunch we give them is the only meal they get in a day.

We currently have 4 volunteer teachers and a cook who doubles up as the caretaker. All our members of staff work on voluntary basis; out of their love and compassion for the children. Our strong desire is that we may have the resources in future to be able to pay them for the good work they do among the children at Tumaini Centre.

Although the need is still overwhelming, the children are happier, healthier, and full of hope; thanks to our partners, friends and volunteers. We are grateful to God for speaking to you concerning these children.
